Twilight, September 13th, 1814, the attack begins.

 

The British fleet of 19 ships blast Fort McHenry with congreve rockets from the HMS Erebus as well as mortar shells from other ships in the fleet; the Terror, Volcano, Meteor, Devastation, and Aetna. After the initial exchange of fire, the British fleet withdraws to just beyond the range of Fort McHenry’s cannons and continues to bombard the American fort for the next 25 hours.

 

On the morning of September 14th, the 30 × 42 oversized American flag, made by local flag maker Mary Pickersgill and her 13-year-old daughter, is raised over Fort McHenry replacing the tattered storm flag which flew during the battle. The British were instructed not to attack the American positions around Baltimore unless they were certain that the fort could be taken. Seeing that the bombing had failed to destroy the fort; the British commander withdraws from his positions.
