The original beacon of the earth provides the light to lead travelers on their journeys.

 

Over the millennia sailors have relied on the sky to provide them with the information they needed to sail the seas. The sun by day and the stars by night have illuminated their way.

 

Celestial navigation systems are based on observation of the positions of the Sun, Moon, Planets, or Navigational Stars. By knowing which point on the rotating earth a celestial object is above and measuring its height above the observer’s horizon, the navigator can determine his distance from that sub-point. A sextant is used to measure the body’s angular height above the horizon. The height is then used to compute distance from the sub-point to create a circular line of position.

 

The ancient Chinese sailing ships called Junks were developed during the Song Dynasty (960-1129). They are still found in Hong Kong today. The name “Junk” covers many different types of boats including: ocean sailing, cargo carrying, as well as pleasure boats. Although they vary in size and differences in the rig they all have one thing in common; they all use battened sails.
